Health Minister Mitcy Larue and delegation visit Les Mamelles clinic: |03 May 2016

Renovation work to be completed by June

Renovation work on the Les Mamelles clinic is expected to be completed by the end of June, the Ministry of Health has said.

On Friday, Health Minister Mitcy Larue conducted a site visit to inspect progressing works on the renovation and upgrade of the clinic. Minister Larue was accompanied by principal secretary Dr Bernard Valentin, Health Care Agency deputy chief executive Dr Danny Louange, and senior managers.

The Ministry of Health began discussions with Laxmanbhai in 2013 and entered later into partnership with the building contractor for the co-funding of the renovation of the Les Mamelles clinic. The project was expected to start in February 2015, but there was a delay on the part of Laxmanbhai as the company was busy with construction works of its own LAXCON Apartments at Les Mamelles. So renovation work on the clinic started during the last week of February and it is expected to be completed by the end of June.

It has been announced that the renovated Les Mamelles clinic will be connected to the sewage treatment services of the Greater Victoria line.

According to the Ministry of Health, it has injected a sum of R2.7 million into the renovation of the clinic while Laxmanbhai pledged a partnership funding of R3 million for a total renovation cost of R5.7 million.

Health Care Agency deputy chief executive, Dr Louange said the renovation comprises a new building that will deliver new and upgraded services at the clinic.

“The construction of this new building has reached the first floor level. We have upgraded the clinic by adding three dental surgeries and one dark room, an accident and emergency room, an ambulance bay and a dental waiting area. Extension on the first floor comprises a public health office, a staff rest room, a staff pantry and changing rooms,” he said.

He added that all of these new additions will bring more appropriate services to the clinic and will bring a better atmosphere for the staff and patients.

“In this new clinic, there will be more rooms for the staff to work. They will feel more secured which will help them deliver a much better job,” added Dr Louange.

Renovation of the old clinic which covers an area of approximately 504 square metres, comprises complete roofing, including new lowered ceiling and whirly birds for ventilation in the roof space, complete re-wiring including all fittings and upgrading of electrical and associated works, re-tilling of rooms except the common corridors of which existing terrazzo floor will be polished, new plumbing and sanitary wares, a new records’ office, new dressing room and new maternal and child health care office.

A new venipuncture room for withdrawing blood with syringes and needles has been added and new aluminium sliding windows and new doors are being installed.

PS Valentin added that they are satisfied with the renovation project that started in February.

“We are really satisfied by the speed at which the work is progressing at the clinic. Hopefully by the end of June the clinic will re-open for services. It’s in the ministry’s policy that for every project we undertake we invite other partners and this time Laxmanbhai decided to come on board to make such project a reality,” said PS Valentin.

He pointed out that the ministry has made a good investment by investing in a health centre for the community.
