Stabbing incident at Carana: |05 May 2016

13-year-old suspect released

The 13-year-old girl suspected of stabbing her mother on April 22 at Carana, has been released by the courts.

Her release by the Juvenile Court before which she had appeared yesterday followed a demand for such from the prosecution. The latter had indicated that the girl’s mother – the only known witness – wished not to cooperate with the courts, meaning she did not wish to give evidence.

“Without the evidence from the mother, there is nothing we can do,” prosecutor David Esparon commented to the media.

After yesterday’s hearing to which the press was not admitted, the Seychelles broadcasting Corporation crew which had set its equipment outside the court and was preparing to conduct interviews, was attacked and prevented from doing its work by what are believed to be some of the girl’s relatives.

In its yesterday evening’s news bulletins, the national broadcaster described the act as “an illegal action”.

Upon her arrest and remand at the Persévérance police station after the stabbing incident, the police had reported that other to stabbing her mother with a knife, the 13-year-old girl had attempted to poison her mother because she opposed to her having a boyfriend.
