Miss Seychelles … Another World 2016 |16 May 2016

Contestants take wildlife club students on aquarium tour

The 12 contestants of this year’s Miss Seychelles … Another World 2016 beauty pageant have embarked on another charity and goodwill project.

Yesterday, they took a group of 26 students from the Wildlife Club of Plaisance primary school on a two-hour tour of the Eden Aquarium at Eden Plaza on Eden Island.

The tour forms part of the contestants’ Beauty With A purpose project which defines the aim and objectives of beauty within another context of giving out to the community and to also help in the strengthening of community-based projects especially in the health, environmental and social sectors.

Both the contestants and the primary school students who were accompanied by their wildlife club teachers were taken around the Eden Aquarium by its PADI  international certified diver Charles Savy and his team of marine professionals who gave detailed explanations on each of the 100-odd species found in the underwater world of the oceans surrounding the Seychelles archipelago.

The 12 contestant wore BEEPS (Blue Economy Environmental Education Programme Seychelles) embossed T-shirts. BEEPS is a national marine environment and climate change educational programme aimed at raising the level of knowledge of the population of Seychelles with regard to its marine environmental resources and the potential impact this has on our lives through climate change.

“Through BEEPS, which is a non-governmental grouping of marine conservations, we can prepare for such changes while developing a viable and sustainable Blue Economy for Seychelles. As an island nation it is imperative that our people know and understand our marine environment and its resources and limitations,” Mr Savy said.

He explained it is very important that we improve our knowledge of science so that we can develop our ocean resources and at the same time protect biodiversity and manage our fish stocks.  All this needs to be done while making the changes necessary to survive the most difficult aspects of climate change, sea level rise and adapting to the difficulties of seasonal variation and the increasing severity of climate changes.

Meanwhile, Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) chief executive Sherin Naiken has applauded the initiative taken by the contestants in conducting this marine environmental tour of the Eden Aquarium which comes on as added value to their Beauty With A Purpose project focusing on the preservation and conservation of the underwater world of our islands.

Ms Naiken singled out the management of the Eden Aquarium as another partner and sponsor of the Miss Seychelles … Another World 2016 beauty pageant and reiterated her appeal to the private sector and welcomed private organisations and companies to come onboard as partners.

The Miss Seychelles … Another World 2016 beauty pageant will be held on Saturday May 28 at the ICCS as from 6.30pm. Tickets are on sale at the STB head office at Independence House and at the Tourist Information Office, Independence House at R700 each.
