Iranian sailors remanded in custody

Eleven Iranian sailors arrested and charged last month for importing and trafficking in drugs appeared in Court again yesterday and have been remanded further until June 10.

The eleven suspects, including a 14-year-old, are being remanded at the Montagne Posée Prison.

The Iranians were arrested on board a dhow in mid-April following a joint operation by the Seychelles Coast Guard and the NDEA (National Drugs Enforcement Agency).

About 98 kilogrammes of drugs, including heroin and opium, were seized on board the vessel, in what the NDEA said may be the largest seizure ever in Seychelles’ territorial waters.
