Large crowd sample African dishes |30 May 2016

A large crowd of locals and people from different African countries living or working here came together on Saturday evening to sample, savour and discover a large selection of spicy and tasty dishes from different cuisines of the continent.

This was during an African dinner dance organised by the African Community Association of Seychelles formed earlier this year and the event formed part of the FetAfrik activities.

The association’s chairperson Marie-Aline Adesoyede said the turnout for the event surpassed their expectation and noted that they have numerous such activities as well as others lined up to celebrate and keep alive the African culture and traditions among our people.

“We were not expecting so many people but we are happy and it shows that our people here have great pride in our African origin and they don’t miss an opportunity to discover more about the African culture and cuisine,” she said.

Many people who took part in the event donned various colourful African attire including head dresses by both men and women and those who were best dressed were later in the evening rewarded.

Ms Adesoyede admitted that there have been a few hiccups such as the venue which is not necessary adequate to accommodate such an event especially when it comes to the dancing part.

She added that all would have turned out better if it had not rained.

African music known to be very rhythmic and vibrant require ample space for dancers to move, but on Saturday evening the continuous changes in the weather with intermittent drizzles and wind, members of the association were forced to modify the organisation of the event and this was not necessarily to the satisfaction of all those present.

“Now we know the level of interest such events bring and I can assure you we will be better prepared next time,” a determined Ms Adesoyede pointed out.

Tourism and Culture Minister Alain St Ange, culture principal secretary Benjamine Rose as well as former Minister Peter Sinon were present to show their support to the new association.

Minister St Ange congratulated the members for their initiative to promote African culture and help keep alive our origin and links with the African continent.

He assured the association of his ministry’s support and encouragement in their future endeavours.

Members of the association presented the guests with tokens of appreciation.

Other than the savoury dishes guests also enjoyed a few cultural performances by the visiting group from Nigeria.
