Letter to the Editor - It is never OK to drink and drive! |08 June 2016

Last Sunday while driving back towards Beau Vallon, it was my misfortune to be behind and between several vehicles which were slowly making their way in a motorcade in support of a political cause.

My misfortune, besides the inconvenience of being in this motorcade, was to witness for myself the occupants in a vehicle in front of me opening up a bottle of Whiskey, pouring it in cups and then distributing it to all within the car while in motion.  Another misfortune happened when another vehicle, with their party flags, pulled off to the side of the road and in view of others, passengers disembarking to relieve themselves along the road.

I appreciate that the primary responsibility rests with the licensed driver and operator of the motor vehicle taking part, and for all occupants within that transport to ensure compliance with the law.  My view however is that the organiser in addition should as well set down some basic rules for participation, demonstrating clearly their support for the laws in place and setting a ZERO tolerance for drink driving.

I have always believed that for public safety and good order, such events must be well coordinated with the competent and responsible authorities.  Having witnessed what I saw on Sunday afternoon I am again convinced that good communication and close coordination is needed.  Especially now as continued political manifestations are becoming more apparent and frequent.  Some I know may not agree believing instead that they are ‘free’ to do and manifest how they see fit.

We are free to participate, however let us check ourselves and be disciplined enough to behave in an appropriate manner.  The lives of those on the road may just depend on it.  As for those who relieve themselves in public? The police need to do their job if they witness this.  Then again, those manifesting themselves for a political cause may just call it victimisation or abuse of authority.

Simply editor I think it’s high time, and considering latest road fatalities, that when such events take place, organisers take the time to remind their supporters to behave themselves.  After all taking no action may result in a tragic incident at which time it will be too late.  After all those attending are in fact a ‘captured’ audience.  The organisers of such events should waste no time in getting their fullest support.

It is never OK to Drink and Drive nor to be abusive or disrespectful to others.
