During an auspicious event held at the Eden Bleu hotel on Saturday morning 57 students from the International School of Seychelles (ISS) graduated from Year 11 and Year 13.

From the Year 13 (Y13), 18 young graduates have completed their A-Level studies and will now be taking the next step towards the achievement of their dream while some among the 39 Year 11 (Y11) students will return to the school to complete their sixth form if they have passed their IGCSEs.

There were three categories of awards given out which included the subject awards where each year those with the highest rankings in each subject are rewarded. Then there were seven special awards and the Duke of Edinburgh awards.

The most outstanding student was Abimaelle Onezime who clinched the Board of Governors’ award.

The award was presented to her by the chair of ISS board of trustees Sarah Rene.

Abimaelle studied four A-Levels, as she completed her Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award and also found the time to volunteer her time to support others.

She is a team player with a positive attitude and member of the ISS fund raising team who have raised nearly R20,000 in the first two terms of this academic year.

She has been the youth representative and chairperson for the National Youth Festival and is currently a member of her district family council where she volunteers her time with disabled teenagers and encourages good family values. She is currently the clerk of the Youth Assembly.

Abimaelle said she is very proud to have won the award.

“I think it is just my love of helping others and working hard inside and outside of the school, and joining multiple groups in order to see a change in the lives of people.”

She is currently taking a gap year but hoping to further her studies at university level on a scholarship after she gets her results in August. She intends to follow a career in the medical department in either medicine or biomedical sciences.

The head of key stage 4 award went to Y11 student Isa Sadar Mohammad who has completed his IGCSEs in only a year and he was recommended by numerous teachers for this award.

The head of sixth form award was won by Aashay Shah. He has shown academic resilience and is a positive and confident member of the student leadership team.

The Y11 principal’s award went to Viraji Gamage Don who carries her identity as an ISS student with pride and volunteers her time and skills for the benefit of the school, while the Y13 principal award went to Harsha Rayudu for his academic excellence. He taught himself accounting in year 12 when ISS did not offer the subject at AS level and managed to achieved an A grade in the summer exams.

The sports award for exceptional representation of ISS went to Adam Viktora. He is a committed and dedicated swimmer, with a very impressive list of swimming achievements including many local successes.

Karen Doku received the student leadership award as she is the student who stands as the figure head of the student body.

Apart from Abimaelle, Aashay, Karen, Jansi Camille, and Yazmeen Georges have also received the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award.

The five students are the very first students from ISS to complete the International Duke of Edinburgh award.

Addressing the graduates, the principal of the school Margaret Pillay said: “For many of you this may be the last time that we see each other face to face. You will soon spread your wings and look to experience life in other places, other communities. Right education does exactly that; it fosters a love for learning, sharing and an understanding of our community and our place in it.”

She said the academic year 2015-2016 has been a very eventful year that has seen the school spearheading the building of communities, engaging its students in debates, demonstrating the prowess of its athletes and envisioning a future together.

The head of secondary Peter Rowlands said he firmly believes the graduates will go on to do great things.
