To commemorate Constitution Day on June 18 – the day Seychelles’ Third Republic was proclaimed – children from professional centres and secondary schools have had the opportunity to debate on the duty of every citizen to protect and improve our country’s environment.

The finals of the national debate for educational institutions which has been organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the National Celebrations Committee and SIDS Youth AIMS Hub was held at the Seychelles Institute for Teacher Education (SITE) yesterday morning.

After they had crossed words against each other, each school received a certificate of participation while those which attained the semi-final stage received a certificate and educational material.

Added to those prizes, the winners were also rewarded with a trip to Silhouette and a trophy. They were the School of ‘A’ Level Studies (SALS) in the professional institutions category and Beau Vallon in the secondary school category.

The runners up were respectively the School of Business Studies and Accounting (SBSA) and Praslin secondary.

Stanio Sally (SALS) and Marisa Samedi (Beau Vallon) were voted as the best orators.

Other students made up the teams as follows: Sonam Tsultrim, Eminielle Elizabeth and Jean-Michel Camille (SALS); Omegan Jean-Marie-Ciseau, Jill Julienne, Anissa Souffe and Saffia Robert (SBSA); Kian Houareau and Linzy Pierre (Beau Vallon); Sarah Purvis, Ezra Bistoé, Marielle Nizeyemand and Deneilson Lesperance (Praslin secondary).

The students received their prizes from the hands of the principal secretary for environment Alain Decommarmond.

Commenting that it was not easy to speak before an audience, head of jury Jacques Koui congratulated the schools which had taken part.

“You are all winners,” he said as he invited them to start preparing themselves for next year’s competition.
