Flag-raising ceremony marks second Constitution Day |20 June 2016

Seychelles celebrated its second Constitution Day on Saturday with a flag-raising ceremony at 

the Moniman Lavwa Lanasyon on 5th June Avenue.

Present at the ceremony were President James Michel, Vice-President Danny Faure, founding President James Mancham, Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Herminie, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Mathilda Twomey, President of the Court of Appeal Francis MacGregor, ministers and other dignitaries.

It was 23 years ago — on June 18, 1993 — that the people of Seychelles unanimously endorsed a new Constitution ushering in a new era of development by signaling the birth of the Third Republic.

That day was given further prominence two years ago with the announcement that June 18 would from then on be observed as Constitution Day.

The flag-raising ceremony therefore paid tribute to the supreme law of the land — the Constitution of the Republic of Seychelles — as well as to the national symbols like the national flag and the national anthem.

Both the national flag and the national anthem are 20 years old.

Youth representatives of the Young Citizens’ President's Award Programme handed over the Seychelles flag to members of the Seychelles coastguards before it was raised accompanied by the singing of the national anthem by three young men.

The event was punctuated by patriotic, spiritual, peace and unity songs.

Travis Julienne sang his newly composed song for the occasion and it is entitled Avan Tou.

As for the group 'Omega' they performed both a spiritual song and a reflection in which they asked for blessings always from the Almighty for our people and country.

The flag-raising ceremony culminated with a closing performance by the National Youth Troupe who performed a medley of popular Creole songs which inspire the promotion of peace, unity and patriotism.
