Seychelles hopes to benefit from new regional research in agriculture project |24 June 2016

A new regional research in agriculture for development project is in the process of being set up and the Seychelles Agricultural Agency (SAA) and its partners are identifying the country’s needs in different areas so it can prepare a document to be submitted to the regional committee.

The new project falls under the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) and the Centre for Agronomic Research for Development (Cirad) from Reunion island. It held its first committee meeting last year in Mauritius during which five main areas common for all countries of the IOC were identified.

These are : animal health, animal breeding systems, protection of biodiversity, genetic resources, and food production.

The aim of the four-year project which is being funded by the European Union  through the IOC aims to push for excellence in research and innovation to  strengthen production capacity and resilience of small farmers and their families, to develop regional partnerships, encourage regional research cooperation and promote transfer of technologies in agriculture.

A series of information sessions are being held in the different IOC countries to inform concerned parties of the project.

Claude Vuillaume from the Cirad earlier this year met officials from the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture and the SAA to brief them on the project and to help set up a national committee to work on identifying the country needs.

Marc Naiken, the chief executive of the SAA, said a meeting of regional agriculture ministers is expected to be held before the end of the year to chart the way forward.
