Eden Mineral Water donates dental chair to Baie Ste Anne hospital |30 June 2016

In an effort to promote oral health and mitigate the problem of tooth decay, gum disease and other oral health problems in the Praslin community, a dental chair has been donated to the Baie Ste Anne dental clinic.

The donation was made by JK Naidoo, the proprietor of Eden Mineral Water company, based on Praslin.

The handover of the donation took place in the presence of Health Minister Mitcy Larue, Health Care Agency (HCA) board chairman Maurice Loustau-Lalanne, HCA chief executive Dr Suresh Menon, his deputy Dr Danny Louange, and Dr Franky Fanchette, a dentist at the Baie Ste Anne dental clinic. The ministerial delegation was on a one-day working visit and visited both the Baie Ste Anne and Grand Anse clinics as well as held meetings with its staff.

Mr Naidoo, who also owns OM Foods on Mahé, presented the chair to the acting chief dental officer, Dr Velmurugan Chetty.

The new dental chair, worth some R25,000, will be placed in the Baie Ste Anne health centre’s dental clinic and the former one has been transferred to the Baie Ste Anne school campus. The new chair will provide part time oral health care services to children from private schools and preschoolers and adults referred for hygiene treatment around Baie Ste Anne region.

The Baie Ste Anne dental clinic sees some 450 patients monthly including 110 school children.

The dental clinic also carries out advanced dental surgeries and is staffed with two dentists, two dental therapists, five dental surgery assistants and one dental hygienist.

Tooth decay and gum disease are the two most common chronic oral diseases affecting our children population as they frequently forget to brush their teeth compounded with a diet with more sugary foods.

It is also known that children miss substantial school hours each year due to dental related illness. Thus, the dental chair which has been moved to the Baie Ste Anne school campus will address the oral health needs of the children of that school emphasising on good oral behaviour thus accentuating the Oral Health Day 2016 theme of: ‘It all starts here. Healthy mouth. Healthy body’.
