Nomination of Uganda’s former VP as AUC chair

Uganda seeks Seychelles’ support

Mr Ruhindi is welcomed at State House by President Michel

Uganda is seeking the support of East African countries, of which Seychelles forms part, for the nomination of Dr Specioza Naigaga Wandira Kazibwe, former Vice-President of Uganda, as the chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

Frederick Ruhindi, special envoy for Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, yesterday called on President James Michel at State House to deliver a message to that effect.

“Today I delivered a special message from President Museveni to the Seychellois head of state. President Museveni is proposing Dr Specioza Naigaga Wandira Kazibwe, former Vice-President of Uganda, to be the chairperson of African Union Commission,” he said.

He said the post is currently occupied by Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma of South Africa but she has indicated she is not running again.

“The ideal would have been for North Africa to compete for the post but it didn’t file a candidate. Therefore East African countries would be best in the tube. They have proposed a candidate in the name of Dr Kazibwe,” said Mr Ruhindi.

“We hope to get the initial support across East Africa for the next chairperson of the African Union Commission,” he said.

Mr Ruhindi commended Dr Kazibwe for the post as he said she has the necessary qualifications and capacity.

Dr Kazibwe is a Ugandan surgeon and politician. She is also referred to as “Nnalongo”, because of her twin daughters. She was Vice-President of Uganda from 1994 to 2003. She was the first woman in Africa to hold the position of vice-president of a sovereign nation.
