Minister Mondon speaking at the launch of Careers week yesterday

‘Choosing the right career for me and my country’ is the theme for this year’s Careers week which was officially launched yesterday.

A series of activities have been organised at schools, professional centres, workplaces and the ministry to mark the week.

Careers week is annually organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Human Resource Development, and various other partners from the public and private sectors.

Activities being organised consist of a number of professional guidance and work-based sessions such as promotion of the teaching profession, presentations on career opportunities at the Seychelles Trading Company (STC), Landscape and Waste Management Agency (LWMA) and the Central Bank.

Special emphasis is also being placed on ICT as a viable career path for female students.

On this note the Minister for Education Macsuzy Mondon officially launched Careers week 2016 and the Microsoft DigiGirlz programme.

Present during the ceremony were the Minister for Labour and Human Resource Development Idith Alexander, principal secretaries, among key officials.

Minister Mondon said one of the main objectives of this event is to strengthen the relationship between educational institutions and workplaces for the provision of accurate information on training, employment and career development prospects to our students.

“Fundamentally, Careers week complements the careers education and guidance programme; it is an additional opportunity to equip our students with the necessary competencies and instill in them values they need to make informed decisions at critical stages of their education process, for successful transition from school to further education or to the world of work.  Students are also encouraged to be proactive and use information provided to help them choose their career pathways. Ultimately, it is with this objective in mind that the theme ‘Choosing the Right Career for Me and My Country’ was selected for this year’s Careers week,” she said.

Minister Mondon said institutional mechanisms are being consolidated to bridge the gap between training and the labour market.

“As we pave the way to offer a better careers education and guidance service to our students, we must continue to emphasise the importance of work and transition from school to work,” she said.

Talking about a number of new technical and vocational options made available to our students, she also stated further developments that will further benefit students such as the agreement to be signed shortly by the Seychelles Business Studies Academy (SBSA) with ACM & Associates Certified Chartered Accountants for the purpose of training in QuickBooks, so as to provide students with competencies in a new accounting software, to increase their opportunities of securing employment in a variety of accounting firms.

She added that similar developments are also envisaged for other professional centres.

She is inviting all partners and social actors to support us in our endeavour to improve the quality of careers education and guidance offered within the educational institutions and in the workplaces.

“This will ensure better labour supply and address skills shortages in our country, thus reducing unemployment in Seychelles,” she said.

During the ceremony Microsoft Indian Ocean Islands and French Pacific representative from Mauritius Caroline Koa Wing gave a brief overview of the DigiGirlz programme in Seychelles.

There was also a presentation of 200 t-shirts from Microsoft to the ministry of education.

A forum on promoting male gender in careers is expected to be led by Pastor Robert Moumou and Wilven Alcindor at SIDOL followed by a professional guidance session on job opportunities in LWMA.
