Letter to the Editor - ‘No one has a monopoly on democracy’ |30 July 2016

I refer to certain publications in the LDS (Linyon Demokratik Seselwa) associated press which has questioned my integrity and alluded to the fact that I am either dishonest or bankrupt. I categorically refute these allegations. I am neither dishonest nor bankrupt. These allegations are purely politically motivated. Disputes between clients and banks arise all the time and this was no exception. These matters were being handled by my lawyer Mr Brian Julie with clear instructions to negotiate an out of court settlement should the figures be justified.

Seychelles Patriotic Movement (SPM) welcomes those who wants to take the party to court over claims that the leaders of the opposition failed to unite in the first round of the election after several rounds of negotiations and yet instantaneously went into a coalition in the second round because R12 million changed hands to keep the opposition apart and keep the government in power. In fact we know of another R1.5 million that was collected from a businessman of Indian origin at Anse Royale. This also came with the instructions not to unite the opposition. These allegations have been printed numerous times in a national newspaper which even challenged the opposition to sue them. They never did and now believe that we are a soft target. Our lawyers will be delighted to have those leaders and their sponsors on the witness stand to shed light on this onerous transaction.

We are equally shocked with the opposition threatening to sue SBC for broadcasting our press conference after all the marches they made against the same Institution over freedom of speech. This only goes to show that LDS is a façade which preaches about democracy when it suits them but their true intention is based on principles of dictatorship and they see the SPM as a threat, otherwise they would not spend so much time and effort castigating us simply because we decided to exercise our constitutional right and take part in the democratic process. No one has a monopoly on democracy!
