Letter to the Editor-Stray dogs a real concern in Seychelles |01 August 2016

It is with great sadness and dismay that I find myself having to write this letter to you.

I am a tourist here from South Africa.  I am paying top Dollar to experience a piece of ‘God’s Paradise’ for two weeks with my family. I also understand full heartedly that you need tourism to survive and thrive as a Nation, it is therefore essential that you understand the importance of what your tourists experience during their stay, and what memories they take back home with them. Neglecting this simple fact means WE WON’T COME BACK!

One of the most concerning things we have seen and experienced is the number of stray, neglected, diseased, and mistreated dogs on the islands.

Not only is this dangerous for health and road traffic (also sleepless nights due to constant barking), it is a DIRECT reflection on the Seychellois people!  In Mahatma Ghandi’s own words: “You can gauge the state of a nation by the way they treat their animals”.

Something urgent and effective needs to be implemented to eliminate this problem and the only way that I can see forward to a solution is for government to take action and QUICK! We certainly will not be returning until I see and hear of progress, and unfortunately there are many tourists who I have spoken to who feel the same way. (We will be telling our friends about this sad state of affairs).

Please feel free to contact me, or have your readers contact me for any kind of input. I am actively involved with the NSPCA in South Africa and am willing to assist here in Seychelles with whatever knowledge I can share.
