International Paralympics Games in Rio de Janeiro |29 August 2016

Dr Lucia Banane accompanies local disabled athlete

Dr Lucia Banane, a medical doctor at the Seychelles Hospital and also a certified classifier under the International Paralympics Committee (IPC), will form part of the three-member Seychelles delegation to the International Paralympics Games to be held in Rio de Janiero, Brazil from September 7 to 18, 2016.

Dr Banane followed a specific training programme for classifiers organised by the IPC in Seychelles two years ago.

A classifier is a person authorised and certified by the IPC as being competent to conduct a disabled athlete’s medical or paramedical evaluation through physical or technical assessment.

Seychellois disabled athlete Cyril Charles, who is a one-legged amputee, will be taking part in the javelin field event at the International Paralympics Games in Rio.

Cyril is being accompanied by his coach, Vincent Cedras and Dr Banane.

The selection of the delegation was made by the Paralympics Association of Seychelles (PAS) which is chaired by the principal secretary for youth, Alain Volcère and has Patricia Rene as the vice-chairperson and Fiona Paulin as the secretary general.
