International Day of Democracy - Stakeholders urged to uphold principles of democracy |16 September 2016

The Association for Rights Information and Democracy (ARID) is urging all stakeholders to uphold the principles of democracy, to promote democratic values and to adhere to national laws and international principles and guidelines on democracy.

The call comes in a message from ARID on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy which is being celebrated today.

The message reads:

“In 2007 the United Nations General Assembly resolved to observe September 15 each year as the International Day of Democracy with the purpose of promoting and upholding the principles of democracy and creating awareness on the importance of democracy.

“One of the objectives of the Association for Rights, Information and Democracy (ARID) is the promotion of democracy and protection of human rights. On the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, ARID is calling on institutions, the State and on all political leaders to uphold the principles of democracy, to promote democratic values and to adhere to national laws and international principles and guidelines on democracy.  We have just elected a new parliament whereby as citizens we have transferred our power to the elected MNAs to represent our interest and defend our rights. Being able to participate freely in elections, to share your views and to participate in public affairs are fundamental rights and obligations of all citizens, hence the backbone of democracy.

“Democracy in Seychelles is evolving and every one of us must contribute to the advancement of this process. As a country we have achieved a lot but we still have many challenges namely lack of some important legislations such as the (RIT) right to information law and some other restrictions in our legal framework non adherent to the international principles on democracy.

“Democracy is also about respecting the rights, liberties and decisions of the people and it is also about citizens taking the lead and engaging in nation building.

“In conclusion ARID is calling on all citizens to enhance their participation in the public affairs of our country, promote the values of democracy and respect for human rights and diversity and maintain our social coherence.”
