UniSey ICT programmes followers receive certificates |24 September 2016

Those who have followed two courses and a workshop in the ICT programmes organised by the University of Seychelles received their certificates yesterday at the UniSey Theatre 2 at Anse Royale.

The R Analysis workshop of which the recipients were the sixth cohort of such training, is mainly aimed at statisticians and those in related fields; Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Information Technology (IT) Essentials for Cisco courses. Those who followed the courses are already in employment in various work establishments but felt they needed further knowledge and career enhancement.

Present at the ceremony were the Registrar of the University of Seychelles (UniSey) Michel Denousse; Dean Justin Valentin of the Faculty of Business and Sustainable Development and Dean Joelle Perreau of Faculty of Arts and Social Development of UniSey; Bernard Songwar, head of programmes and lecturers of the various courses.

Regarding the value of achieving such certifications, Dean Perreau said the R Analysis workshop is very useful to Seychelles in every domain especially for the Bureau of Statistics.

UniSey hopes to continue this workshop as it considers it very important and to have more cohort for this particular training.

She said it is important to have certifications in Cisco CCNA and IT Essentials if one is working in IT or involved in the ICT world.

“So this is only the start. Today we are giving certificates to three groups but we hope to have more of you coming back to continue as there are other higher levels of training,” she said.

She also mentioned the possibility of participants following up further studies to perhaps even become lecturers themselves.

Explaining the components of the course, Mr Songwar said IT Essentials is the basics of computer and laptop dismantling and assembling, the various components inside and their functions, precautions taken when fixing a computer, network basics; mobile software.

Also included on the course is customer care for IT technicians to make clients understand the computer terms being used.

As for CCNA, Mr Songwar said it is a more advanced course.

“If you have already followed IT Essentials, it will help you perform better and understand quicker in CCNA. CCNA is purely computer network – how to install a computer on a network, what the computer needs for the network, IP address, how to design it, its structure like nowadays we have IPV4 IPV6 ; configuration of router, switch – so one has to know all these things,” said Mr Songwar.

R Analysis is using the R software where one needs to input data in it where it then generates the information one needs.

“We advise participants even if they are using R, they also need to have a sound knowledge of mathematics. Because as one follows advanced R, he/she needs a higher level of mathematics,” he said.

As for the results, Mr Songwar said they were very encouraging as many students achieved the 75% pass mark. As IT is around us, he also said UniSey is offering further courses in that area such as Data Analysis using R; Experimental Design and Multifactorial Anova; Advance R; Basic Android Application; Advanced Android Application; C# Application Development using visual studio; Dynamic web application Development with PHP & MYSQL; Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA); CCNA and Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) and IT Essentials.

Kevin Bistoquet, one of the R Analysis participants, had a vote of thanks on behalf all students where he said the hard work on both the lecturers and participants sides, have resulted in success stories.

What the participants say:

Philip Souris, IT Essentials: “This course has certified me as a technician. I learned a lot on software, hardware, a bit on server and network. The course was fantastic as we had a good instructor, Bernard Songwar. I followed the course because I felt there was a need. I did some part of that course at the Seychelles Institute of Technology, but this one at UniSey is an internationally-recognised one. I want to follow CCNA as the next level.”

Versange Dubois, CCNA: “CCNA is based on switching, routing and networking. This course is very interesting to me as it is developing me in new technology across the world like in IT and network. I have learned a lot in that course though it was not that easy. For example where I am working at Cable & Wireless in IP TV, the networking, switching and routing structure in the course will surely assist me in advancing in my career. It was a six-month course but after a lot of hard work and studies, I did not give up. I did my best and now I have passed my course. I will now follow CCNA 2 and will go all the way out to succeed. And a special thanks for my parents and family who supported me all the way.”

Larisha Uranie, R Analysis: “My course was on data analysis for statistics. It is based on computer usage and IT. It is mostly used at the statistics bureau by statisticians but on my side as I am an environment inspector it is useful as we also have a GIS department where such a course is also applicable. As there is another higher level of the course, I hope to follow it in future.”
