World Day for Safety and Health at work - Workplace stress in the spotlight |28 September 2016

‘Workplace stress: a collective challenge’ is the theme chosen this year to mark World Day for Safety and Health at work.

To commemorate the event here, the Ministry of Labour and Human Resource Development, in collaboration with the Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA), hosted an interactive session on the transport and storage industry.

The session took place yesterday morning at the SCAA conference room at Pointe Larue in the presence of the Minister for Labour and Human Resource Development Idith Alexander, the principal secretary in that ministry Veronique Bresson, the chairman of SCAA board Captain David Savy, along with occupational health and safety representatives.

Many people are facing greater pressure to meet the demands of modern working life. Psychosocial risks such as increased competition, higher expectations on performance and longer working hours are contributing to the workplace becoming an ever more stressful environment. With the pace of work dictated by instant communications and high levels of global competition, the lines separating work from life are becoming more and more difficult to identify.
Safety in the workplace is of utmost importance. By creating a healthy and safe workplace, employers do not only show that they care about wellbeing of their employees but they also create a conducive environment in which their employees are happy to work, thus become more productive.

Captain Savy stated that in every work area, people are faced with many challenges.

“It is ironic that many across the world who wish to escape the hustle and bustle of their daily lives run to our picturesquely beautiful islands for peace and tranquillity but for us who live and work here are also faced with our fair share of challenges and stress, particularly in the workplace. It is the symptom of any fast developing country, big or small,” he said.

He added that the SCAA’s main focus is putting the people first.

“At SCAA, our value of putting people first is one that we take to heart. We constantly endeavour to improve the workers’ welfare. It is well known that exercise is a powerful stress reliever, hence why SCAA has invested in a gym for its workers. On our calendar of activities you will find events such as hiking, inter-companies sports competition, and various social activities for physical engagement,” he said.

During the session, there was also a presentation by the Occupational Health and Safety officer at SCAA Marthe Faure, who talked about employees’ security and health, along with a host of safety equipment and uniforms that workers use at SCAA.

In 2014, the SCAA had the privilege of receiving an award for best ‘Safe Workplace’. Such recognition proves that SCAA is doing a hard work to keep their employees safe.

Also a group of staff at SCAA were also rewarded for their humanitarian actions, by responding to a road traffic accident at Pointe Larue. The accident  involved a man who was hit by a car on September 2, 2016 while the SCAA employees in question were going home after completing their 12-hour shift.  They are Linley Belmont (station officer); Gisnel Larue (sub officer) and Marius Esparon (trainee fire fighter).

Also another group was awarded for responding to a road traffic accident at Amitié, Praslin on August 25, 2016. They are Mike Agricole (fire officer); Ralph Mathiot (sub officer); Giovanni Gabriel and Davis Charles (leading fire fighters).

The SCAA Aviation Safety Manager Kisnan Tamatave also officially launched the ‘SCAA Just Culture Policy’ that sets out the beliefs and values that should be honoured at SCAA.
