Youths learn of job opportunities in Blue economy sector |29 September 2016

The SIDS Youth Aims Hub – Seychelles (SYAH) has launched an internship programme for young people to learn about the different job prospects in the Blue economy sector.

With the support by the British high commission and Commonwealth Youth Council, the initiative will promote sustainable development opportunities for young people in Seychelles in partnership with local organisations such as the Seychelles Ports Authority (SPA), Seychelles Petroleum (Seypec), Seychelles Bureau of Standards (SBS), Seychelles Coast Guard (SCG), Seychelles Air Force (SAF), Indian Ocean Tuna Ltd (IOT), Nature Seychelles, Wise Oceans, Save our Seas Foundation, University of Seychelles Centre for Environment Education, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Global Environment Facility (GEF), and Blue Economy Research Institute.

Present during the launch of the programme which took place at the Seychelles Institute for Teacher Education (Site) were students from secondary schools, professional centres and university.

Two members of SYAH – Anthea Laurence and Kalsey Belle – presented an overview of the programme and gave out application forms to those present.

The programme accepts youths between the ages of 15 and 29 and they should be citizens of Seychelles.

Out of the applicants only 25 will be chosen to follow the three-week internship which will start in December.

Those who successfully make the cut will be presented with a certificate, letter of reference or recommendation from the organisation they do their internship.

There may also be reserved training opportunities in entrepreneurship or even extended work attachment period with guidance and mentorship.

Miss Belle said within the second week of the programme 15 youths who perform truly well and display interest in the Blue economy will be chosen to do a week- long study tour in Mauritius.

“During their trip to Mauritius they will be visiting various organisations to learn about what is being done in the Blue economy there compared to Seychelles. Upon their return they will present a project to the organisations in Seychelles and the British high commissioner,” she said.

She is urging the youths not to miss out on this opportunity of a life time.
