Human rights posters to boost students’ awareness of subject |30 September 2016

Each primary and secondary classroom in all schools across the country will be receiving human rights posters to educate children on human rights as well as their responsibilities.

The 850 posters are a donation from the fourth Seychelles Young Leaders Programme (SYLP) cohort to the Ministry of Education as part of their project under the programme.

The batch of posters cost R11,640 and they have been funded by their personal means.

The posters were handed over in the presence of the principal secretary for childhood, primary and secondary education Merida Delcy, director general (DG) for schools Odile Octave, DG for CCATS Dr Odile de Commarmond and students, teachers and other education officers.

The four SYLP students who came up with this initiative are Astride Tamatave, Fabiana Bonne, Rosa Morin and Shirley Low-Meng.

“A component of our programme was to implement a social aspect project which will touch the community and the donation of posters is in line with the social policy in the national social renaissance action plan 2012-2016. In this policy children’s education and their rights is a strong factor,” said Ms Tamatave.

She said each poster is equivalent to each classroom on Mahé, Praslin, La Digue and Silhouette for primary and secondary schools both state and private.

She told the students that with each right there is also a responsibility and that they should ensure that their right does not compromise someone else’s rights.

Ms Tamatave also expressed gratitude towards the Institute of Early Childhood Development (IECD) who supported their cause by putting them in touch with a printing company in India where they received a good deal.

Mont Fleuri secondary five (S5) student Shamira Pillay thanked the cohort for their generous gesture on behalf of the students while PS Delcy thanked them on behalf of her ministry and encouraged the students to learn about their rights and do their best to take good care of their posters.
