SNYC organises third ‘Zenn Kreol’ |24 October 2016

The Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) has organised its third ‘Zenn Kreol’ under the theme ‘Modernizasyon nou kreolite’ which forms part of the many activities being organised to mark Festival Kreol, now in its 31st year.

‘Zenn Kreol’ is an opportunity for the youths to promote our culture and values through diverse activities such as local dance, music, food, among others.

Present at the activity were the Minister for Tourism and Culture Alain St Ange, the principal secretary for culture Benjamine Rose, the principal secretary for youth Alain Volcère, the chief executive (CEO) of SNYC Alvin Laurence, among other guests.

In Seychelles culture is the art and custom that characterise our nation, it is our identity, but many youths have desisted from the Seychelles traditional way of life due to influences from external bodies and ignorance, but SYNC and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture still have hope that our true tradition can resurface or even be modernized for the benefit of the youths.

Mr Laurence stated that many youths have rediscovered their identity throughout many activities that SNYC has organised.

“We want to do more to promote our culture in each region; we have the support of the government to achieve our target. When we look around us we can see our culture, by the way we talk, dress, and the way we look. We must also be honest that our culture has been modernised, but our values have stayed the same,” he said.

Minister St Ange added that our culture must stay in the youths, that such event helps the youths to revive and showcase our beautiful traditions.

When SNYC organises such activity we discover a lot of talents that make us laugh and cry.

Kelly Mathiot, a 16-year-old student from Mont Fleuri secondary, is a very talented young artist who was able to captivate the audience throughout the activity.

“Such activity can benefit all the youths. It helps us learn about our true traditions. As a youth, I urge that we don’t wait for Festival Kreol to promote our identity, let’s do it every day,” she said.

The accompanying photographs show the youths in action and guests helping themselves to some traditional delicacies prepared for the occasion.
