Miss Tourism Buganda in tête-à-tête with Miss Seychelles … Another World 2016 |21 January 2017

Reigning Miss Tourism Buganda 2016-2017 Margaret Nakaye had a tête-à-tête with Seychelles’ own beauty queen Christine Barbier earlier this week at the Seychelles Tourism Board’s office in Victoria.

22-year-old Miss Nakaye was crowned Miss Tourism Buganda back in August 2016, a title which positions her as the main tourism and culture ambassador of the Buganda Kingdom.

Buganda is a sub-national kingdom located in the central region of Uganda and its people, the Baganda (the singular form isMuganda), makes up the largest Ugandan ethnic group.

The Kingdom of Buganda has a long history and rich culture which extends way before the arrival of the Arabs and Europeans in Africa – in fact it used to be one of the largest and most powerful states in East Africa during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Today Buganda boasts a cultural king – Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II – who has no political power and its people are extremely proud of their background and take every chance to practice their customs.

For this reason the encounter between Miss Nakaye and Miss Barbier was an opportunity for both to promote the culture of their respective countries.

They discussed several issues including the differences which exist between Seychelles and Uganda, their respective responsibilities as Miss Tourism Bugunda and Miss Seychelles … Another World, and Miss Barbier’s personal experience in the 2016 Miss World Beauty Pageant.

The reigning Miss Tourism Buganda, in one of her Facebook updates, said this about meeting Miss Barbier: “We spoke about the beauty of the island and I also invited her [Miss Barbier] to come witness the hospitality of the Baganda people.”

Miss Nakaye arrived in Seychelles on December 16, 2016 for a one-month vacation to visit her brother who currently lives here.

She left Seychelles for Uganda on January 16, same day she met Miss Barbier.
