Women’s Lions Club of Seychelles host tree-planting activity |23 February 2017

Most often we plant trees to provide shade and beautify our landscape. It was with this in mind that the Women’s Lions Club of Seychelles in partnership with the Department of Education and Seychelles National Parks Authority organised a tree-planting activity at the Mont Fleuri primary and secondary school yesterday.

This was in the presence of the president of the Centennial Women’s Lions Club Dhana Sasikumar, the head teacher of Mont Fleuri primary school Steve Hoareau, the principal secretary for education Odile Decommarmond, the environmental education teacher Shane Emilie, as well as the school children.

Around 75 trees will be planted at various schools such as the Plaisance primary and secondary, English River secondary and Bel Eau primary schools.

Ms Sasikumar pointed out that trees are vital for the environment, they can store carbon dioxide and stabilise the soil.

“We have worked really hard to make such project a reality. Five different schools will benefit from such venture. Those schools are aware of the importance of protecting our environment and make it more greener,” she said.

Head teacher Hoareau stated that such activity will benefit the earth, combat climate change, clean the air and also provide oxygen.

“The Mont Fleuri primary school is exposed to the sun; we do not have that many trees to protect us against the sun. This activity will allow our school to be more protected and make its environment greener. We will take really good care of those eight trees,” he said.

According to the environmental protection agencies, planting trees is a must if we want to save our planet. Trees not only remove harmful chemicals from the soil, but also help reduce the greenhouses leading to global warming.
