Football: SFF Division One - Goals galore in opening rounds |16 March 2017

The 2017 football season is well and truly underway and already fans have been treated to a whole heap of goals to cheer for. In fact, in only two rounds of matches played so far this season, a total of 40 strikes have found the back of the net.

Forty goals in only 12 games is surely a lot and in the first six of those games, 18 goals were scored and in last weekend’s round of matches, goalkeepers picked the ball out of their net 22 times.

This is a difference of 14 goals more than was scored in the opening two rounds last season, where at this stage only 26 goals had been scored in total with Côte d’Or and St Michel having netted five each.

This season, St Michel are the early top scorers after scoring 10 goals ‒ five in each of their first two matches. They won 5-0 against Revengers on the opening day and collected a 5-4 away victory over La Passe on La Digue last weekend.

La Passe, on the other hand, are the second top scorers with six goals scored. Every team in the 12-team league have scored at least one goal already, compared to last season when Plaisance and St John Bosco did not find the net in their first two outings.

Seychelles’ striking options for the national team is looking a bit brighter with Errol Bacco (Red Star Defence Forces), Francis Nourrice (Foresters) and Roddy Melanie (St Louis) all finding the back of the net, while Leeroy Coralie (St Michel) and Rennick Esther (LightStars) are the early joint top scorers along with La Passe’s Malagasy forward Rhino ‒ all on three goals each.

St Michel lead the league standings with six points and are the only side to win both their games, while Côte d’Or, St Louis and LightStars all sit on four points. As for The Lions, Anse Reunion, St John Bosco and Northern Dynamo they all have three points.

La Passe and Foresters have not have the best of starts, each collecting one point after a draw and a loss in their opening games.

Revengers and newcomers Red Star Defence Forces are the only teams who are yet able to collect a point.

With 40 goals already after two rounds played, it is looking like another great season full of excitement and the hope is that this trend continues.

Who doesn’t love goals?

For more football action, join the football family from today when The Lions face St Louis at Stade Linite. On Friday, St Michel will face their bogey team Northern Dynamo in what should be a great match at Stad Linite and on Praslin, plenty of action is expected in the local derby clash between Côte d’Or and Revengers.

On Saturday, the action takes us to La Digue where Red Star Defence Forces face a tough test as their search continues for a first point in the elite division. Standing in their way will be Anse Reunion.

On Praslin, LightStars will take on Foresters, while at Stad Linite St John Bosco will play La Passe.
