Sec and SIT enhance partnership through MoU signing |20 March 2017

Staff and students of the Seychelles Institute of Technology (SIT) are set to benefit from training on renewable energy.

This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the institute and the Seychelles Energy Commission (Sec).

The Sec is the electricity regulator in Seychelles and the advisor to government on electricity related matters. The commission also implements energy policies and promotes the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies as well as energy conservation through behavioural changes.

The MoU was signed by the director of Sit Hubert Barbé and the chief executive (CEO) of Sec Tony Imaduwa in a brief ceremony held at the SIT, Providence last week.

Mr Barbé stated that SIT needs good partnership with organisations and businesses.

“SIT as a training provider needs good partnership with different TVET institutions, organisations, businesses and regulatory authorities such as the Sec in order to achieve respect as well as recognition as a centre of excellence in skills training,” he said.

He added that the signing of this MoU sets out a good working relationship with Sec.

“Such partnership includes our involvement and participation in various projects such as in renewable energy, especially PV solar technology, energy efficiency, green energy technologies such as rain water harvesting and solar water heating among others,” he said.

Mr Imaduwa pointed out that such MoU will help set up good training programmes for the students and staff at the school.

“The MoU will create a good relationship between the school and the Sec as well as set up good training programmes for the staff and student. We all have a role to play in renewable energy. SIT is preparing your youths for such task, and to understand more about the importance on renewable energy,” he said.

The ceremony also saw the presentation of certificates to twenty participants who took part in a six-day training session on solar water installation in January organised by the GOS-UNDP-GEF RE Project.

Also present during the signing ceremony was the principal secretary in the Energy & Climate Change department Wills Agricole, who donated a solar water heater to the Seychelles Youth Hostel.

Solarhart company also donated a solar water heater to the SIT.
