Seychelles to host first ‘immersive exhibition’ |24 March 2017

Seychelles will host its first ever ‘immersive exhibition’ in June this year, an event organised by the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) in collaboration with the University of Seychelles (UniSey) and Rayunitect.

In line with this a competition to that effect was officially launched yesterday by the principal secretary for Youth & Sports Fabian Palmyre in a ceremony held at the Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education (S.I.T.E) auditorium, Mont Fleuri.

The ceremony coincided with the World Meteorological Day (WMD).

Present at the launch were the chief executive of SNYC Alvin Laurence, the owner of Rayunitect Raymus Laurence, Miss Seychelles 2016 Christine Barbier, UniSey representatives, students among other guests.

The ‘immersive exhibition’ competition seeks to promote Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through awareness and a competition inviting all schools to mount a 3D maquette of their sustainable school.

On September 25, 2015, countries adopted a set of goals to end poverty protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda. Each goal has a specific target to be achieved over the next 15 years. The 17 SDGs are no poverty, zero hunger, good health, quality education, gender equality, lean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry innovation and infrastructure, reduces inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land, strong institutions and partnerships for the goals.

One of the organisers of the immersive exhibition, Raymus Laurence, stated that such competition will be based on modern technology in order to promote awareness about SDGs.

“This immersive exhibition mandate is to engage students in a dialogue about issues affecting our numerous communities and the solution will be expressed through architectural maquettes. This will also provide opportunities for the public to interact with the designs. Hosting this exhibition for the first time will be something different from other exhibitions. The public will be able to experience SDGs 9 & 11 in a more interactive way,” he said.

The competition is open for secondary, post-secondary and UniSey students, and the exhibition will be held from June 6 to 13, 2017.

The winners will receive cash prize, camping trip to Curieuse island and a trophy for most sustainable school design.
