Powerful educational programme steers youth towards healthier sexual behaviour |24 March 2017
Safer Sex Week, observed from March 27 to April 1, 2017 under the theme “Safe Sex, My Responsibility”, will be marked with a week-long campaign organised by the Aids Prevention and Control Programme at the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the National HIV and Aids Social and Behavioural Change Committee (SBCC).
The campaign will promote healthy sexual choices among the public while targeting key areas of the population, i.e. young people. In line with this, a mass sensitisation programme on Safer Sex Practices will be conducted in secondary and post-secondary institutions across Mahé.
Two secondary institutions who will benefit from these sessions are the English River and Plaisance secondary schools.
Students aged between 15 and 17 years old will acquire life skills and information they require to make informed decisions and protect themselves from HIV and STI (sexually transmitted infections).
Key messages disseminated throughout these sessions as well as the entire campaign will be the practice of safer sex as a particularly important step in reducing associated risk and vulnerability to HIV and STIs.
“We appreciate all the efforts put into the education of the public on Safer Sex practices but we need to take the work further than that and successfully strengthen and implement the right safer Sex practice strategies,” says Lyn Arissol, health promotion officer at the Aids Prevention and Control Programme.
The sessions will also feature discussions on effective use of condoms, abstinence, being faithful, reduction of sexual partners and preventing use of drugs among adolescent.
This year’s theme operates in accordance with the campaign ‘My Health, My Responsibility’ employed by the ministry urging everyone to be more active and be more accountable for their health.
