Air Seychelles and Round Table donate 100 water fountains to schools |25 March 2017

As part of a large community initiative to provide free drinking water to school children in Seychelles, Air Seychelles and the Seychelles Round Table (SRT) have donated 100 water fountains to the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development.

The donation of water fountains worth more than R500,000 was presented to the Minister for Education and Human Resource Development Joël Morgan, in a small ceremony at the Glacis primary school, yesterday morning.

Also present at the ceremony were the Minister for Health Jean-Paul Adam, the chief executive (CEO) of Air Seychelles Roy Kinnear, the president of SRT Lenny Gabriel, the head teacher of Glacis primary school Vivienne Preira, principal secretaries, teachers, students, among other guests.

This donation also coincided with the first anniversary of the school and to mark World Water Day which was celebrated on March 22, 2017.

The fountains will be distributed in all 47 schools on Mahé, Praslin, La Digue and Silhouette, according to their number of students and installed in canteens, providing pupils with a healthy, clean source of water.

Air Seychelles initiated the project last year and was quickly joined by the SRT, which pledged to use funds raised during Regatta 2016, the popular annual beach festival, towards the cause.

Accepting the donation Minister Morgan stated Air Seychelles and SRT are doing a wonderful project to provide clean water to all government crèches, primary and secondary schools.

“This is an incredibly important project that directly supports our School Nutrition Policy and promotes the health benefits of drinking water. Having free drinking water will reduce the consumption of sugary drinks, combat obesity and ensure our children are hydrate, which is important for cognitive function and learning,” he said.

The CEO of Air Seychelles added that as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the company is proud to provide free and clean drinking to all government schools.

“We are delighted to play a role in bringing drinking water to all public schools in Seychelles. Air Seychelles prides itself on having a strong CSR policy and with this project we are accomplishing a number of positive objectives  ̶  promoting healthier habits for our youth and reducing the amount of environmental waste, especially from plastic bottles,” he said.

The President of SRT, Mr Gabriel, also pointed out that SRT is proud to once again deliver a hugely positive project for our community.

“Our water fountain projects will encourage healthy habits in our children by providing readily accessible drinking water in schools. It is a fantastic project and we wish to thank our partners and members of the public, whose continued support has made it possible.

During the ceremony there were also sketches and songs by the primary students.

Mr Gabriel also announced that Regatta 2017 will be held once again at Beau Vallon from September 29 to October 1.
