The Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) has once again showed its support to the Health Care Agency (HCA) through a monetary aid towards a research study on obesity related risk factors in children.

The bank has donated a cheque for R28,000 towards the study in which 250 primary four students from four schools on Mahé and La Digue have been chosen from set criteria to take part.

The sales and customer service manager Rose-Marie Hoareau presented the cheque to the deputy chief executive of HCA Dr Danny Louange in a short ceremony on Friday at the Seychelles Hospital in

the presence of the director family health and nutrition Rosie Bistoquet, the chief executive of the National Aids Council Anne Gabriel, school children, among other guests.

Dr Louange expressed his gratitude to MCB for its continued support to the HCA.

“MCB has generously donated to the campaign to protect children against obesity.  Such donation will allow us to combat such factor in our society, and also allow us to do better research on such a major problem,” he said.

Mrs Hoareau on her part added that from the moment they began discussions with representatives of the Ministry of Health on such project, it became clear that the high rate of obesity in school children is quite alarming.

“Statistics show that obesity in school children has been on the increase since 1998, with no sign of diminishing.  If remedial action is not taken to reverse this trend, the health of our children is in jeopardy and further complications will arise as they become adults, leading to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease to name a few,” she noted.

In partnership with the Seychelles Trading Company (STC), the money will be converted to R100 vouchers for the purchase of fruit and vegetables from STC Hypermarket or the STC supermarket at Orion Mall. These vouchers will be offered to each participant along with their respective primary four teachers following completion of the study.

The research study on obesity and obesity related risk factors in children began in February 2017 at the Baie Lazare primary school with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The study will continue throughout the year in three other schools.
