Careers@Hilton Week - Young hearing impaired people tour Hilton Northolme Resort for prospective jobs |17 May 2017

The three Hilton properties in Seychelles - Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort & Spa and Doubletree by Hilton Seychelles Allamanda Resort & Spa - have taken part in the Careers@Hilton Week. This is an annual global career event showcasing the many opportunities available in the hospitality industry for youth and other job seekers.
From May 15 to May 21, Hilton hotels and corporate offices around the globe are hosting hundreds of events to inform young people about the exciting and diverse career opportunities in the hospitality industry.

What is different this year? Doreen D’Souza, the human resources manager of Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort & Spa, explains: “It is the first time we are inviting youth and young adults with some disabilities. We want to see if we can give these youths some opportunities to work and develop themselves in the hospitality industry. There are so many jobs where you do not need to communicate to be able to do like housekeeping, office work and cleaning. We are trying to see how the youth will respond. It will be a new experience for them and for us.”

The chairperson of the Association of People with Hearing Impairment (Aphi) Anita Gardner, who accompanied the youths on this outing, expressed her gratitude towards the hotel.

“This works perfectly for us as we are trying to encourage our students to look for a job and develop themselves. Being hearing impaired is not an excuse for not moving on with life and we are training them to slowly accept the fact that others will also appreciate them at work,” she said.

Seychelles NATION asked the youths how they felt about the visit and they were all super excited and wanted to go in the swimming pool!

After being welcomed by the general manager of the hotel, Gregory Therion, the HR department accompanied them for visits of every department of the hotel to learn about the work that needs to be done in a hotel.

The week from May 15 to May 21, 2017, is part of Hilton’s Open Doorscommitment, which aims to positively impact at least one million young people by 2019 by connecting them to opportunities in the hospitality industry, preparing them to reach their full potential or directly employing them. Also yesterday, several secondary students from Anse Royale, Anse Boileau, Belonie and English River, visited the hotels to gain knowledge on how a hotel operates.  This will help them to make their final choice this year to join STA.

Careers@Hilton Weekevents are a unique opportunity for Hilton to inspire job seekers about careers in the hospitality industry, and to support them by providing guidance on the skills that are vital to succeed in the workplace and beyond. Participants join Hilton for events ranging from résumé clinics to networking, as well as presentations from current employees about their career paths in hospitality. On May 26, Hilton Hotels will also be present at the Career Fair at the ICCS.
