Hackathon winners rewarded |20 May 2017

 

 

 

 

Tharindu Madusanka and Yeshan Lakshita are the winners of the 2017 Hackathon competition organised by the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) in collaboration with the University of Seychelles (UniSey) under the theme ‘Arrived on Time’.

The winners were rewarded during the closing ceremony of ICT week at the International Conference Centre Seychelles (ICCS) yesterday afternoon.

Present at the ceremony were DICT principal secretary Benjamin Choppy, the chief executive of the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) Alvin Laurence, among other guests.

The competition, which was organised as part of activities to commemorate ICT week, is aimed at promoting the development of apps in the country, where the participants had to develop a mobile application for Android, IOS or Windows Platform.

The participants had only 24 hours to develop an application, and for this year, three teams were present.

The winners of this year competition Mr Madusanka and Mr Lakshita said that it was quite a challenging competiton.

“It was our first time developing an app and learning such technology.  At first we had to adapt ourselves and put our mind into the competition. But at the end we all came out winners,” they said.

They received a certificate, shield, among other interesting prizes.

The second team comprised Sivarajan Varadarajan and Poonghuzhali Pillay while Krisl Gopal, Alex Mania and Ruth Mohotti made up the third team.

PS Choppy thanked everyone who took time to take part in the competition.

“It was an interesting competition and all the participants came out winners. To organise such a competition we had the help of many organisations and I hope that next year’s event will be more challenging,” he said.

Yesterday also saw the opening of a laptop fair, were laptop/notebook suppliers were displaying their wares and offering discounts on selected items. S1 to S3 students could also benefit from a laptop scheme through which they could buy a laptop for half the price.

Vice-President Vincent Meriton also visited the laptop fair yesterday afternoon.

“This year is the third year that we organise the ICT Week, where we availed of this opportunity to enhance the awareness of our generation on the importance of ICT. Yes, we are progressing with technology but we need to be careful and have the proper guidance on how to better use it,” he said.

Present at the fair were different laptop sellers such as FairMart, Samsung, Techzone and Lifestyle.
