Widget team wins fourth Seychelles Webcup |26 May 2017

The Widget team of Ricky Henry, Alice Fanny, Anisha Mangroo and Joel Dupres beat two other teams to excel at this year’s Seychelles WebCup.

The four winners will represent Seychelles in the regional final later this year against the winners of six Indian Ocean islands who competed in the preliminary round competition simultaneously over a 24-hour period - from 12 noon on Saturday May 20 to 12 noon on Sunday May 21, 2017.

The local segment of the competition held at the Care House, Freedom Square was organised by SEY-IX (Seychelles Internet Exchange Point Association) in collaboration with the Webcup Association of Reunion.

Present during the prize giving ceremony held yesterday at Autoland showroom, Providence were the principal secretary (PS) in the department of information, communication and technology (DICT) Benjamin Choppy, the contestants and sponsors among other guests.

The runner-up with nine points was The Box team comprising Archille Marimba, Delroy Finesse and Dario Hoareau while the third position went to the Web Hunters team comprising Tharindu Madushanka, Yasanka Lakshita and Asanka Fernando with seven points.

The Web Hunters also won the Virality prize for getting most facebook likes. They got 205 likes.

The participants had to spend 24 hours non-stop to design a website for an amusement park.

The sponsors of the competition was DICT, Cable & Wireless Seychelles (CWS), Today in Seychelles, Maren, VCS, Switch Pty Ltd and Free Wifi Nation.

Among the prizes received by the winners who scored 14 points aside from certificates and engraved crystal plaques were Xiaomi MI5 smartphones, cash prizes and the opportunity to represent Seychelles at the Grand Regional Final with airfares and accommodation already paid for by the WebCup Association.

They received their prizes from PS Choppy and CWS managing marketing communications and public relations manager Arthur Lopinto and other sponsor representatives.

The other islands taking part are Reunion, Mauritius, Madagascar, Mayotte, Comoros and Rodrigues.

This year the grand final was supposed to be hosted in Seychelles but budget constraints is not allowing it to happen.

The chairman of SEY-IX Gilbert Lebon said the Webcup was conceived with the main purpose of promoting ICT among our youth.

“It gives students and amateurs the opportunity to work alongside our professionals and also compete against them. It is also intended to show the ‘fun’ side of creating ICT projects, although some of the participants would disagree that working 24 hours non-stop is fun,” he said.

He noted that the competition is not only designed for ICT enthusiasts but also for young people aspiring to become graphic designers and marketing professionals.

Commenting on the quality of work produced by the three teams he said “it is evident that the projects have gotten better over the years”.

Mr Lebon said next year they will spend more time and effort to market this event among the secondary schools, post-secondary institutions and the University of Seychelles as they need a much wider participation.

Mr Henry said except for Alice, all members of his team had taken part in this event at least once and they came prepared.

“As we went through all the projects at the end of the 24 hours it was evident that we had developed more content compared to the other teams. It was nice, challenging and fun,” he said.

Ms Fanny said it was not as exhausting as she thought it would be.

“To find all the content within 24 hours was not easy so it helped me developed my agility,” she said.
