Football - Au Cap take the lead in division two, Plaisance in familiar position |27 May 2017

With most eyes on the battle for the premier division title this season, the second and third division leagues also promise to be very exciting indeed with the battle for promotion already heating up, with some surprise contenders.

After grabbing a 3-2 victory over the other title contenders Victoria City on Thursday, Au Cap find themselves atop the standings with 21 points from 10 games this season, with the side possessing the most potent attack in the league, scoring 32 times so far.

Victoria City, meanwhile, have slipped to second place on 20 points, while newly promoted Glacis, who have played one game less, are third also on 20 points, but with an inferior goal difference than Victoria City.

It might seem like a three-horse race, but Real Maldives must also be counted among the challengers as they currently sit third on 17 points, having played only eight times so far and at the moment they have the best defence across all three divisions, having only let in an impressive three goals all season.

At the other end of the table, the battle for survival also looks likely to be interesting, although winless St Francis at the moment are looking like favourites to go down as they currently have only 3 points from three draws after eight matches played. Above them are St Roch who have only won once this season and have 4 points to their name.

In the division three league, it is another familiar name at the top of the standings and fans must be hoping that this Plaisance side can avoid the “curse” of their predecessors, who after achieving successive promotions were shut down due to various disputes within the team. Maybe the third time will indeed be lucky as they currently lead the standings with 16 points, in the first season of formation. Plaisance have the meanest defence in the league with 10 goals conceded from seven outings.

Another newly formed side, Point Larue Bazar Brothers, are in second place, only a point behind Plaisance and it is looking increasingly likely that the battle for promotion will be between these two sides.

At the bottom of the league, Beau Vallon sit in last place with five points, after collecting only a single win from seven games and conceding a league-high 25 goals. Mont Buxton are ninth in the standings, one point above Beau Vallon.
