Wavel Ramkalawan wins defamation cases |05 June 2017

Wavel Ramkalawan has won two defamation cases and the court has ordered he is paid a total of R200,000 ‒ R100,000 for each case.

Chief Justice Mathilda Twomey delivered the judgment on May 30, 2017, in two separate cases involving Mr Ramkalwan and Parti Lepep (formerly Seychelles People’s Progress Front) and Marie-Antoinette Rose, the editor of The People newspaper at the time.

The cases involved three articles published in Parti Lepep’s People Plus newsletter in October and December 2006.

The plaintiff, defended by Anthony Derjacques, said the false and malicious statements in the newsletter were published to expose him to public ridicule, odium and hatred.
