Schoolchildren, teachers join Mayor of Victoria in tree planting on world environment day |06 June 2017

A group of schoolchildren and their teachers from five different schools in town joined the Mayor of Victoria, David Andre, yesterday morning to plant trees in the compound of his office building to commemorate World Environment Day.

This year’s World Environment Day is celebrated under the theme ‘Connecting People to Nature’.

After welcoming the children and their teachers in his office, Mr Andre gave a brief historic account of the building where his office is located.

He then said: “We want to build a sustainable city and plant fruit trees wherever we can in order for others to benefit from. Today we are doing a symbolic gesture of planting a custard apple tree and a goyave de chine tree. This action is to promote the fact that we want Victoria to become greener and to do that we all think of planting fruit trees. We are also looking for various other places which we could transform into public spaces for people to enjoy nature.”

After the tree planting, each school representative received a fruit tree to be planted in their schoolyard. Even a small act, the students thoroughly enjoyed this activity and for sure understood why we should all care for our environment and why we should aim to become a sustainable island.
