Flag-raising ceremony marks Seychelles’ third Constitution Day |20 June 2017

Seychelles celebrated its third Constitution Day on Sunday June 18 with a flag-raising ceremony at the Moniman Lavwa Lanasyon (the Voice of the Nation monument) on 5th June Avenue.

President Danny Faure attended the event which was organised by the National Celebrations Committee chaired by Designated Minister Macsuzy Mondon. Also in attendance were the president of the Court of Appeal, Justice Francis Macgregor, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Mathilda Twomey, leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Wavel Ramkalawan, leader of Government Business in the National Assembly Charles Decommarmond, ministers, members of the National Assembly, members of the judiciary, government officials, representatives of the diplomatic corps and other distinguished guests.

The ceremony paid tribute to the Constitution, the supreme law of the land, as well as the national flag and national anthem as the source of pride and patriotism for all Seychellois citizens.

It was through a referendum 24 years ago, to the day, that the people of Seychelles endorsed a new Constitution, signaling the birth of the Third Republic and ushering in a new era of development.

This auspicious historical occasion was given further prominence three years ago with the announcement that June 18 would from then on be observed as Constitution Day.

The flag-raising ceremony therefore paid tribute to the Constitution of the Republic of Seychelles, as well as to the national symbols like the national flag and the national anthem.

Youth representatives of the Young Citizens’ President’s Award Programme handed over the Seychelles flag to members of the Seychelles coastguards before it was raised accompanied by the singing of the national anthem by Jim Hoareau.

The event was punctuated by patriotic, spiritual, peace and unity songs.

The flag-raising ceremony culminated with a closing performance by the One Harmony Choir, under the direction of Bennet Accouche, who performed a medley of popular Creole songs which inspire the promotion of peace in our country.
