International Society for Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) Local students sit international dance exams |23 June 2017

The School of Dance of the National Conservatoire of Performing Arts (NCPA) is once again hosting the International Society for Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) examinations.

The exams, which started on Wednesday, ends today.

The Examiner, Pamela Eddleston of the ISTD, England Examination Board, spent the first three days on Mahé at the School of Dance and will be on La Digue today to assess some candidates there. Exams are from 9am right up to 5pm every day and candidates are released for the particular set time.

The director of NCPA, Pierre Joseph, stated that there are around 90 students who have undertaken the ISTD.

“Altogether, dance candidates have totalled a record number of 72 entries on Mahé and 18 on La Digue, making a total of 90 entries in Modern Theatre Dance and Imperial Ballet Exams. The exams are classified in levels and grades so it is of course spread out from Pre-Primary Ballet as the beginner grades right up to Intermediate Ballet as the highest Level,” he said.

Lower grades often comprise candidates aged between six and 13 years, whereas medium level grades tend to be 14 to 16 year olds. High grades, mostly registered by students who are with the School of Dance for more than eight years, are in between adolescents and young adults.

He added that this year, there were three Seychellois candidates who attempted to do the most recognised ISTD exam.

“This year we saw three Intermediate Ballet candidates attempting to do the most recognised ISTD exam for students and this is the Intermediate Ballet exam. They are Denis Rose, Alda Aumeeruddy and Wilnette Joseph,” he said.

Special mention is for La Digue candidates who are taking their first exam today with the School of Dance.

Mr Joseph also took time to thank everyone who contributed to make such exam a success.

“On behalf of the senior management of the Department of Culture, the dance teachers and head of dance and management of NCPA, we thank all parents who have brought their children in our care until this special day and wish them success in the remaining days of the exams,” he said.
