International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking |26 June 2017

‘Awareness, resilience and education key to fighting drug abuse’

We need to build up resilience within our children and youth, their families and communities if we want to win the war against drugs.

This comes in a message from the Secretary of State for the Prevention of Drug Abuse and Rehabilitation, Dr Patrick Herminie, on the occasion of the International Day for Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which is being commemorated today, Monday June 26, 2017.

Dr Herminie’s message reads:

“On the occasion of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, I would like, on behalf of the government, to reiterate once again, our strongest support for the prevention of drug use based on science.

“We recognise the fact that the war on drugs is not, and will not, be an easy one. We need to build up resilience within our children and youth, their families and communities, hence, the reason we welcome the theme for this year ‘Listen first – listen to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe’.

“Through awareness, resilience and education from early childhood, we can eventually create a generation of Seychellois youth against drugs and thus de-normalise the use of substance in our country.

“Although the theme is about listening, let us not forget that we will only be successful in reducing demand for drugs by putting in place institutions that will effectively enable those affected to rehabilitate and reintegrate in society.

“Today, as we listen to our children and youth, we are also thinking of the parents especially mothers, who are suffering from the ravages of drug addiction. We urge them to keep hope alive and rest assured that we will eventually emerge victorious simply because we are on the right side of history.”
