What is the difference between a securities exchange and a stock brokerage firm?

A securities exchange (or a stock exchange) is an institution which hosts a market where securities such as shares, bonds, options and commodities are traded. Buyers and sellers come together to trade during specific hours on business days. Stock exchanges impose rules and regulations on the stock brokerage firms who are involved with them. One of the main purposes of a securities exchange is to allow businesses to raise capital for different projects they wish to undertake by issuing shares to the public.

On the other hand, a stock brokerage firm is a financial institution that facilitates the buying and selling of shares between buyers and sellers. A stock brokerage firm is a member of the securities exchange. A stock broker is an individual that executes buy and sell orders submitted by their clients on the securities exchange. Stockbrokers connect the buyers and sellers of shares on the securities exchange and trade on behalf of individuals and companies, and for their services, stockbrokers charge a flat fee or a commission, which is the percentage of the sale or the purchase price. Stockbrokers advise their clients whether to buy, sell or hold shares. Good stock brokers thoroughly research any security on which they make recommendations.
