New private school set to open by 2020 |18 July 2017

A new private school supported by the diocese of Port Victoria is set to open by 2020.

The news was announced by the project’s committee in a press conference held last week at the Domus.

The ‘Olivier Maradan School Project’ will, apart from its academic aspects, put emphasis on moral values and spirituality, elements the committee claims is lacking in our current educational system and community in general.

The concept is being engineered by a committee consisting of various business persons, professionals in education and other sectors as well as religious officials.

Dr Gerard Adonis, a member of the committee, said they have already strategised and come up with a business plan.

“In essence our application has been approved by the Ministry of Education [and human resources],” he reported.

However funding, or the lack thereof, is one of their main challenges and therefore the committee plans on approaching different financial institutions for support.

When fully established the school will house a kindergarten, primary cycle, secondary cycle and even a post-secondary. It will also aim to serve the community and help people.

It will also have staff quarters but the committee remains undecided if the school will have facilities for boarding students.

According to their financial analysis tuition fees are expected to be less expensive than other private schools in the country.

“We will explore all avenues possible to make sure that tuition fees are affordable,” Bishop Denis Wiehe added.

Although affiliated with the Catholic Church the school will accept students of different backgrounds and religious beliefs. It will be up to parents to decide if the school will fit their children’s needs.

The Church’s contribution amounts to providing certain personnel for the smooth running of the school as well as supplying the land (on Ile Aurore) on which the school will be constructed.

More information and figures on the project are expected to be revealed in due course.
