Letter to the Editor - More effective shelter from the elements needed at the Victoria bus terminal |27 July 2017

My dad arrived from England recently and went to the bus terminal in Victoria to catch the bus to Anse Boileau. He asked an elderly lady if she knew at what time the next bus would leave. She responded that she didn’t, and went on to explain that she herself was waiting for the bus to Bel Ombre, although she was sitting where passengers get onto the Anse Boileau bus.

“I’m just here to get some shade, the sun is too much at the Bel Ombre platform,” she added.

My dad could see that where passengers wait for the Bel Ombre bus the benches were all fully exposed to the afternoon sun, making it unbearably hot and uncomfortable for anyone there.

The next day he told me that we could help resolve this issue by writing a letter about it to a newspaper and the department concerned would investigate and come up with a solution.

The Victoria bus terminal is used not only by local people but also by tourists. At times there are delays with the buses, and people have to wait longer than usual. The Bel Ombre platform is not the only part that is inundated with sun at certain times of the day, forcing people to seek shade at other sections of the terminal.

The saddest thing is that sometimes you even find the elderly people running from one platform to another so they can shelter in the shade. For the elderly, this can be a real problem. When their bus finally comes they have to run back to the right platform, often ending up at the end of long queues and being unable to get a seat on the bus.

I have noticed that a similar situation arises when it rains: people need to squeeze on the terminal at their platform so they won’t get wet.

As a young Seychellois who will form part of the future generation I would like the SPTC to investigate the matter and come up with a solution for the benefit of the bus terminal users.
