New addition to National Library collection |28 July 2017

The National Library has added another book related to Seychelles to its collection.

The title of this new book is ‘Subjectivités seychelloises - Identité et insularité dans la poésie seychelloise contemporaine’ written by a young Hungarian author Károly Sándor Pallai.

Mr Pallai, a 29-year-old doctorate in literature, does a lot of publicity for ‘Sipay’, a locally-produced poetry magazine.

In fact it was one of Sipay’s founding members Maggie Vijay-Kumar who handed over the book to Anne-Mary Robert, principal librarian of the Seychelles National Library, in a short ceremony on Wednesday.

It is through Sipay that contact was made between Mrs Vijay-Kumar and Mr Pallai.

“Károly has even learned to speak Creole and has even written poems in Creole which have been published. Károly speaks eight languages. The book “title” is one of the components of his Doctorate. The book is already in universities in Louisiana and Hungary which are very huge institutions. Through the book people in these countries get to know about the Seychelles and the happenings there,” said Mrs Vijay-Kumar.

Mrs Vijay-Kumar said names of many Seychellois, including hers, are mentioned in the book. Apart from writing on Seychelles, Mr Pallai also has pictures of buildings on the islands.

On her part, Ms Robert noted that the national collection of the library includes all documents that have to do with Seychelles.

“We very much appreciate the donation. And thank you very much for remembering the national library,” she said upon receiving a copy of the book.

Ms Robert said any publication that has to do with Seychelles, written by either a Seychellois or a foreigner, is kept in the national collection.

“But if it’s published overseas, it’s at the discretion of the author to let us have a copy. In the case of Mrs Vijay-Kumar who knows the author and the importance of having a copy in the national collection, they know the importance of us having a copy of a book,” said Ms Robert.
