President’s speech to the National Assembly |01 August 2017

Ceps supportive of measures announced

The civil society platform (Ceps) is supportive of the different measures announced by President Danny Faure in his recent address to the National Assembly.

“We support the proposal for the establishment of the two new tribunals because we believe that aggrieved citizens must be compensated and given fair justice,” says a communiqué from Ceps chairman Jules Hoareau.

Ceps recommends that every effort is made in ensuring the impartiality and independence of the tribunals.

“Good governance and democracy are the guiding principles of our organisation and such values must be upheld at all levels in the government hence your proposal to separate the roles of the chairperson and the chief executive of the election commission is commendable,” says the communiqué.

Ceps notes that this was one of the many recommendations made by both the local and international observer missions in Seychelles.

In addition to supporting the proposed revision in the age limit for retirement, Ceps commends other decisions proposed by the President to support other economic sectors especially the agricultural sector.

“We welcome the decision taken by the government to give the schools and other educational institutions their autonomy. The governance structures of these institutions will now have a greater role to play in upgrading the standard of these institutions,” says the communiqué.

Mr Hoareau says as the chairperson of Ceps, he commends and welcomes the call made by the President to all citizens to take their responsibilities in promoting good values and in harnessing social cohesion and harmony in our country.
