Maritime academy hosts open day for secondary students |18 August 2017

Secondary students from various schools around Mahé such as Plaisance, Anse Boileau, Independent School, and even as far from La Digue and Praslin have had the chance to get a feel of what goes on at the Seychelles Maritime Academy (SMA) through an open day at the institution yesterday morning.

The aim of the open day was to allow the students to have an idea of what the school offers in terms of courses, to view the classes, as well as interact with the students at the academy.

Currently the academy is offering three main courses -- in navigation, marine mechanic and fisheries science and technology, alongside ten short courses.

The assistant director of the academy, Captain Wilton Ernesta, stated that such open day will allow the students to get a better insight into the SMA.

“We’ve organised such activity with the help of the careers guidance section at the Ministry of Education to give the secondary students a better understanding of our school, the courses that we offer. The maritime industry in Seychelles is a very important one and we need talented and disciplined students to come and follow the courses,” he said.

Adrian Asemota from the English River secondary school pointed out that he has chosen to pursue his post-secondary studies at the SMA.

“Since very young, I am passionate about the sea and I’ve always wanted to take up a career related to maritime. I want to apply for the marine mechanic course, which will open various opportunities for me career wise,” he said.
