Local crisps - the crispy flavours of Seychelles

There’s no better crisps than those made locally using ripe bananas, sweet potatoes, breadfruit and cassava.

Crispy, tasty and sweet local crisps have been the favourite snacks of many lately and the demand for these delicious treats has increased.

Boysenberry-coloured sweet potato crisps known for their scrumptious texture and leaving your taste buds amazingly happy, have earned their reputation as one of the most sought after local delicacies.

This week as Seychelles is marking its first Seychelles Entrepreneurship Week, we meet one local entrepreneur who has decided to bring back the taste of our local flavours through these mouth-watering local crisps.

Meet Philippe Hoffman, an energetic man who even at his age is determined to keep moving forward his Mont Fleuri-based enterprise.

Mr Hoffman says he uses cassava, sweet potatoes, breadfruits but his specialty is using bananas.

“I use two types of cassavas – one called mayok Sengapour rouz and the other one is known as mayok lawet. These are the two types of cassavas that will give you good crisps,” he says.

“You need to choose your tuber crops well. There is a whole process that you have to do if you want quality results.”

Mr Hoffman’s neatly packed crisps have also been tasted by many abroad and have also been used in tourism fairs across the world.

But how did it all start?

“It was one of my brother-in-laws from Australia who encouraged me to do this. We bought a slicer and a few other things to begin with, and did it on a smaller scale. But then based on demand, I decided to continue and expand. Now my products travel around the world and are highly recommended.”

“You need to persevere in what you do so that you can reach greater heights. I have been in this business for 32 years and as the years went by, the business has expanded and evolved. We need to keep supporting small enterprises as they also have their place in our economy.”
