Seychelles Heritage Foundation organises educational workshop |24 August 2017

Primary and secondary students gathered yesterday morning at the Domaine de Val des Prés to take part in a two-day holiday activity organised by the Seychelles Heritage Foundation (SHF) under the theme ‘Traditional Creole Home Garden’.

The students will be able to discover and learn more about traditional home gardens, the different plants and vegetation within the garden and also how the garden was laid out.

The aim of the workshop is to promote both natural and cultural heritage in educational and learning organisations, to upgrade student’s knowledge on such traditional Creole gardens and instill in them a desire to cultivate one.

It is also an opportunity for them to help in the promotion and conservation of medicinal plants thus preventing their complete extinction.

Another aim is to encourage this outdoor activity as a hobby as well as beautify the environment of their schools.

Egla Laudelout-Rose from the Education and Information Unit at SHF stated that such important elements in our history need to be taught to our young generation.

“Most Seychellois households grow a garden today; the aim of this project is to empower the children with knowledge of the horticultural aspect of our heritage which will contribute towards its preservation and conservation, while ensuring intergeneration exchange of values,” she said.

At the end of the workshop, the students will come away with a better understanding of what a traditional garden at home was like.
