Hilary Joubert crowned Miss Seychelles 2017! |28 August 2017

Hilary Joubert is Miss Seychelles … Another World 2017 after the judges gave her the nod ahead of 13 other contestants on Saturday night.

She will represent Seychelles at the next Miss World beauty pageant to be held on November 18 in Sanya, China.

The Miss Seychelles … Another World 2017 pageant was held on Saturday evening inside a packed Avani Barbarons Resort & Spa under the theme ‘Miss Seychelles Another World ‒ Labote Seselwa ‒ The pearl of Seychelles’.

Among guests present at the event were Youth, Sports and Culture Minister Mitcy Larue and Marie-France Verlaque, the first-ever Miss Seychelles in 1968.

Hilary is 23 years old and lives at Glacis. She works at the Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB) as a customer service representative/greeter.

“I was not expecting it. So I am very happy and very emotional. I enjoyed my experience and it was something beautiful where I learned a lot. I will miss all the other contestants very much,” said Hilary who was crowned by Ms Verlaque.

Also voted Miss People's Choice, Hilary succeeds Christine Barbier as Miss Seychelles. Ms Barbier was not present at Saturday night’s ceremony.

She added that her project is about bullying in schools and on how to deal with the bullies and the victims as she believes bullying is a very big problem for our society.

“I am planning to re-open the YRTC (Youth Residential and Treatment Centre) which was on Praslin, but this time at North East Point. This will see children who have bad behaviour problems be disciplined. Working with victims is as crucial as tackling the perpetrators,” added Hilary.

Petra Tamatave is the first princess while Serah Jumaye was crowned second princess.

Other winners on the night were Tracy Françoise (Miss Photogenic), Seychelle Worth (Best Project titled ‘The Physical Fight Against Drugs’ and Miss Sports), Angie Denousse (Miss Talent), Serah Jumaye (Best Evening Gown) and Nerli Haide (Miss Personality).

The winners won various prizes including air tickets, accommodation in hotels or guesthouses, keep fit vouchers, cash prizes just to name some.

The 14 contestants according to the organisers’ numbering were Keisha Pereira, Angie Denousse, Falaine Dora, Joanna Pouponneau, Hilary Joubert, Stephanie Bastienne, Ella Marie, Petra Tamatave, Seychelle Worth, Ralista Hortere, Serah Jumaye, Nancy Esparon, Tracy Françoise, and Nerli Haide.

The evening also showcased the journey of the contestants before the crowning. These include the culinary competition held at the Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA) where group two consisting of contestants numbers 1, 13, 5, 10, 9 and 6 came out the winners, the boot camp at Albizia Guest house and won by Petra Tamatave, and a video of the journey of all the contestants.

Entertainment was provided by local singers like Travis, Fastidious, Anna Rose, Tania, Samia, Kelly, Telsy and the School of Dance.

Also on the night, Avani Barbarons Resort & Spa general manager Stephen Vilar presented a cheque for R50,000 to Clifford Mondon of the ‘Make a child smile’ foundation. The money will go to Christelle, a little girl who needs a kidney transplant. Money was also collected from those present for the same cause.

Meanwhile, in a short conversation with Ms Verlaque, she said the first Miss Seychelles was not a paid event and anyone could come and watch.

There were 11 contestants and all of them were Seychellois as is the case until now.

“At that time there were the second and third winners and not first and second princesses as they are known now. The crown was made out of some sort of shell and at the end of the Miss Seychelles term, we had to give it back,” said Ms Verlaque.
