Visit to Cascade and Pointe Larue districts |16 September 2017

President wants to see work on district projects speed up

President Danny Faure has again set out deadlines and timeframes to either complete or start work on various district projects and social issues during another one of his regular visits to various districts in the country.

Yesterday he visited the districts of Cascade and Pointe Larue, both situated in the eastern part of Mahé, where he and his delegation accompanied by members of the National Assembly of both districts -- Jude Valmont for Pointe Larue and Charles De Commarmond for Cascade, representatives from MLUH, SLTA, social affairs, NDEA, poverty alleviation office, toured various spots of both districts which the MNAs and DAs have earmarked as areas that need urgent or most attention.

At Cascade President Faure visited tenants living in emergency houses at Brillant; the asphalt plant at Petit Paris which will cease operation soon as a new one will be commissioned at Providence in a few months’ time; Anse des Genets road projects.

He also visited several families where he was briefed on the various issues and constraints they are facing especially when it comes to building or renovating their houses.

The president was also updated on work to be carried out on Cascade bridge which includes the de-silting of Cascade river. It is a project which will be carried out by the Seychelles Land Transport Agency (SLTA) and the United Concrete Products (UCPS).

The president also visited the site of a reclamation project near the Cascade market which will consist of a pan of 1000 square metres which will protect the coastline, a new market for fishermen from both Pointe Larue and Cascade, a slipway and pontoon. Work on the project will be mobilised in a month.

At Pointe Larue, President Faure visited a proposed road project to open up Caryole to Anse des Genets road to vehicular traffic so as to alleviate traffic flow at Pointe Larue. At Nageon Estate, the president was informed of the need to accelerate the first phase of work and for an immediate start of the second phase of the ex-Charlesia housing project which consists of the construction of 4 units.

He also met and interacted with several families on the various issues they are facing.

President Faure also had time for a chat with drug users in the district and even had staff from his office taking down their names so that they can be enrolled on various education or work programmes available.

He later held a meeting with representatives of both districts where he briefed them on his visits, issues noted and set out deadlines and timeframes to carry out and complete or projects and issues identified during his visits.

Elaborating on the reason of such a presidential visit, MNA De Commarmond said certain works and projects were dragging too much and therefore needed the president’s intervention.

“The emergency houses given to residents from Les Mamelles while redevelopment of the district was being undertaken were for a period of a few months. A few months has now reached thirteen years. I have put pressure on the ministry in question to resolve the issue, but nothing has been done. So I invited the president to come and see how his government is functioning,” he said.

Mr De Commarmond also talked on the planned recreational area earmarked for youths which until today has not materialised. Sewage problem with housing estate in that area of Brillant was also raised by the MNA. He also advised the government, especially the Seychelles Planning Authority, to allow certain locals to construct their houses near a rock which the authority considers a danger to the inhabitants. Mr De Commarmond believes as a housing estate is already built there, why not other houses.

He mentioned the asphalt plant which will be decommissioned soon as a new one will start functioning in the very near future at Providence. And that people who have been affected will be compensated as the case is already with the attorney general’s office.

The PSSW office which is almost empty has been proposed as a police station for the district with discussions still ongoing.

He also talked on other areas visited and housing issues brought to the attention of the president.

“I am very happy. Each time we have an interaction with President Faure, he is onboard to see for himself how things are, to put things into action,” said Mr De Commamond.

Mr Valmont also expressed his wish of seeing things move much quicker in his district Pointe Larue. He mentioned the important role such a road link will contribute towards easing traffic flow in his district as he said Pointe Larue is a district with many footpaths but not enough motorable roads.

“What we are proposing is that Caryole Nageon Estate is connected as a road to Anse aux Pins. And the second part, Nageon Estate phase 2, is connected to the main road from Pointe Larue to airport. We, the district authority, inhabitants and myself as MNA, sincerely believe Pointe Larue’s traffic problem will not be resolved ‘dan plateau’, instead in the mountains where the planned road links are being constructed. The road will also bring about land development as it is said that Pointe Larue is among the five districts with an abundance of land,” he said.

He also spoke of the various areas visited by the president and was very appreciative of the type of housing project being carried out in the Nageon Estate ex-Charlesia.

“Nageon Estate is a housing project which started 35 years ago. Surely the houses are almost in ruins. Phase one has already been done with 15 housing units constructed. The beauty of the project is that it is not only about a block of flats being built. The government now sits with a family sorting out its needs. So when the family is assisted, let’s say 10-11 people, three families are seen in a house. The government actually builds a house which caters for three families. Therefore on one site, the housing problem of three families are solved,” he said.
