Peace Boat’s Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador Programme |19 September 2017

Shafira Charlette to represent Seychelles

Shafira Charlette, aged 21, was recently chosen to be one of the youth representatives for the Peace Boat’s Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador Programme.

Ms Charlette, who was part of the official delegation representing Seychelles at the Ocean Conference earlier this year in New York, considers herself a passionate environmental activist and she is currently a board member of the youth-led NGO SYAH-Seychelles.

The Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador Programme was announced at the Ocean Conference earlier in June this year. Through this programme, participants will have the opportunity to raise awareness and to advocate on matters relating to climate change and the ocean.

They will also be sharing their own local and personal experience when it comes to tackling effects of climate change and issues related to the ocean.

Special focus will be placed on the impact that climate change have had on the participant’s respective community.

The journey will start on Friday this week in Barcelona where the young ambassadors will officially board the Peace Boat. Among the places they will visit are London, Edinburgh, Bordeaux and New York City.   While in ports, the youth ambassadors will work closely with non-governmental organisations and government agencies to convey their message to the public and the world. Their experience will also be documented at the COP23.

Apart from sustainable development goals (SDG) 13 and 14, the programme is also expected to address other SDGs such as quality education, responsible consumption and gender equality.

“I am very excited, and I hope to inspire other young people,” says Shafira when speaking about her upcoming journey.

“I hope to learn a lot, especially more on how other countries are dealing with climate change and what they plan to do about it,” she continued.

Given that her journey will be showcased at the upcoming COP in Bonn, Germany, Shafira has appealed to all other young Seychellois to connect with her to let her know their views and inputs on climate change and the ocean.

Apart from Shafira six other young people will also be taking part in this programme. The other young participants come from Fiji, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, the Caribbean, Belize and the Maldives.
